Irrational But Predictable

Das Frog

Hey, this looks like fun!

From the Olympics to "She's acting strange again!"

THE IDEA

I was just watching the 2024 Olympics when there was an advertisement for some new show that is about to debut.

The “tagline” is something like “Irrational behavior is predictable”. Not sure if I got that exact, but that is the idea.

Okay so I thought about it a few moments and decided to write this post.

Now, full-disclosure, I haven’t looked anything up yet, but if I need to, I will and I will also re-do this post a bit if need be, but in the meantime I want to get my thoughts down before I lose interest.

Okay, so IS irrational behavior predictable?

Yes, and no.

TRUST FACTORS

Is it rational for anyone to want to have their every moment tracked, scrutinized, and threatened? Then why do you have a cell phone that has GPS, can be monitored, and can be hacked which will expose your personal information to the hacker?

How about getting on social media and putting up whatever for the world to see? Got it! So what?

Yep, some people believe, trust, and take for granted a lot more than do others.

Good or bad, our brains act with our beliefs. Our beliefs are controlled by how we think and make decisions. Our decision making is controlled by what we have learned from out parents, family, friends, schooling, etc. from birth forward (mostly).

Also, on occasion our brain just might act all on its own without our help. Just ask anyone who knows me – they really think I’m strange (case in point, do you remember my “Home” page?).

Back to rational/irrational behaviors. Are they predictable?

One problem I am having with this rational/irrational subject is the fact that rational is usually associated with something “Normal”, or “By the Book”, “On the Straight and Narrow”, “Socially Acceptable” (Bad example-what isn’t S.A. anymore?), and other “Mainstream” types of behaviors.

Realize that in much of the middle East you need to cover your head if you are female. In many parts of the Mediterranean a woman can go swimming and doesn’t have to wear anything at all, on any part of her body. She can – GO JAYBIRD! (as in naked as).

Making another attempt here…

Culture, upbringing, thinking for oneself (dying practice I think), research, and many other processes involving belief, self-control, processing thoughts and emotions, and the work involved trying to preserve some semblance of rational thought (possibly another dying practice) are all related to this idea that behavior of any kind (rational or irrational) is predictable.

WHAT DOES RESEARCH SAY?
